Warning Signs

Here are a few warning signs, posted around the farm.

Only once a year, are people warned to stay out.

It’s really for their own well being.

Who knows what could happen on All Hallows Eve.

With all the noise and activity that goes on here in the month of October, it’s only fair that I warn the innocents.

Because once they enter, it may be too late to change one’s mind.

Take her for instance.

If she had paid attention to the signs,

instead of listening only to the muffled rants of her little sister….

She might have noticed the tree.

A Halloween Story 2008

I have to admit, I was a little aprehensive, when I requested everyone’s participation in this Halloween adventure.

I know people are busy, like me. And I know they have other things to do besides amuse me in my little corner of the world.

I wasn’t sure how interested people would be.

But I gave it a shot.

And maybe I’m perceiving this all wrong.

But I think you have enjoyed this story as much as I have.

“THANK YOU” for your participation in “OUR” Halloween Story 2008!

I have been reluctant to let this story come to an end. I have looked forward each day to reading all of your contributions. I am sad to see it end, how about you?

If I start having withdrawal symptoms, we may have to do this again. But with a different theme.

Just until I get a handle on things and learn to cope on my own.

Your would do that for me, right?

I don’t want to look out my window and find those men in the nice white coats coming for me.

My kicking and screaming, begging and pleading, would not be pretty.

Don’t let them lock me away!

For those of you who are just stopping by, my October 1st post, was a reader request. You can read it here.

Without further ado, here, in its entirety is…

A Halloween Story, 2008

(click on the first word to see who contributed that line)

Just a word of caution: this is really long, so grab yourself a drink and get comfortable!

Just before dark, on the outskirts of town, a witch…

was hiding behind the barnyard, changing into her disguise. Nobody would ever realize, that this innocent looking “farm hand” was really at the town fair to steal…

frog legs from the frog jumping contest participants. It was for her spooky concoction that consisted of frog legs,…

bat wings and turtle heads. She made this concoction every year, so she could…

keep her youthful appearance. For little did everyone know that the young looking farm hand was…

really over 500 years old. Her special brew kept her young so she could continue her…

rampage of kidnapping and eating all the naughty kids in town. She began this gruesome activity because…

of what happened to her so many millions of years ago. She was scorned and planned on getting revenge. She could taste it and wanted vengenance for…

the prince who left her standing at the church for the pretty young girl who lied about…

being a princess…but she really was a witch…a witch that cast a spell on her many years ago…a spell that…

made her grow nose hair that was five feet long and smelled like…

well, she would never know what it smelled like…because all that hair had destroyed and blocked her sense of smell. But she could still see very well and the look of her crooked and crusty…

toes. Being a witch is hard on the feet. Especially if your broom was in the shop for repairs. But she didn’t care, because she liked to walk to town and…

check out all those houses along the creek. She really like to be near the creek because…

she could always find crawdads to make…

her special fishishinf juice. She was able to use that to catch the monster…

that always tried to braid her nose hair! The monster was black and green, hairy, smelled like dirty diapers and…

the witch didn’t notice the odor until the monster braided her nose hair. It nearly knocked her down. She did the only thing a witch of her caliber could do…

She cast a love spell on a farmer that was available, making him fall in love with her. She could then control the farmer and would insure that she had a place close to town to practice her magic because Halloween would soon be here. She had big plans for this Halloween. She…

got busy laying in her supply of toe nail clippings, rodent bones and…

60’s girl group CD’s. She might be a witch, but she still like to shake her good thang!! Her new farmer love came in just as she was stirring her brew and before she could stop him he took a sip, thinking it was that nights dinner. He started to choke and…

then the most wondrous thing happened. The farmer started to grow. He grew and grew and grew. Before you knew it his head started to poke through the roof and as he stood up the whole house lifted off its foundation. Why the witch…

very nearly fell off her stool, craning her neck as she watched him grow even taller. Quickly she started going over her recipe and the ingredients in her head. Bat wings, ear hair, grasshopper wings, inch worms…

oh, good golly. It was that eye of cod that was the problem. How could she have made such a silly mistake? She really should have used…

snake blood. Now she would have to convince the farmer to dance naked under the full moon at midnight to reverse the spell. Then she could continue…

her concoction and get on with her gruesome game of…

Halloween mischief. That night, as the moon was shining and the stars were twinkling, the witch has seduced the man and they were both dancing naked at the strike of midnight. Thank goodness, she thought, the spell was reversed, the farmer returned to his normal size. This was good news because she had plans for him. She went back to her black pot, adjusted the recipe and began to bottle it up. The next day, as the farmer was doing repairs to the house, the witch went down to the creek to find…

a silver toad. Now the silver toad is a very rare commodity and only a witch can tap into its very special powers. She began boiling a cauldron full of sea snails, pigs feet, blood from a salamander and…

then it struck her……why am I doing this? I feel quite “strange”,…..sweet mercy……I think I have fallen in love with my farmer!!!! All that naked dancing has messed with my thought process! Do I still want to be an evil witch….no!!! But how do I become a good witch…she thought and thought and then it came to her…

that there was only one method. She would have to go to the head witch and admit her predicament. She hopped on her broom and then she sailed through the air. She finally reached the head witches house, she thought…

why are the door and windowsills painted blue? That keeps witches out! I must have taken a wrong turn. She changed direction and flew…

right back to the same house with the cottage blue trim. She hovered on her broom and peered into one of the windows. Sure enough, she was at the right house because all her sister witches were cackling together in the kitchen. But there was something different about them. Aha, that was it!

She quickly flew away. And into a tree. It knocker her off her broom and into a swollen creek. The current was too fast and too strong for her to swim out. And without her broom she couldn’t fly out. The creek was taking her closer and closer to town. And without her disguise, she was worried that…

the people of the town would see her and realize who she really was and hurt her or maybe even kill her. What would she do? BAM! Her head hit a rock. She remembered being dizzy, then nothing…She floated in oblivion to a shallow spot and got stuck. How long she lay there, she did not know, but as she fuzzily woke up, she heard a voice. Did she know it? She was not sure. She opened her eyes, very slowly and saw…

There before her with his robes flowing, the head of his staff glowing a golden yellow, stood Tobia, the wizard of the east. Standing next to him with eyes flashing as bright emerald stones and his irridescent scales, stood his magnificent dragon, Malicut. The witch began to tremble. Tobia opened his mouth to speak, and said…

I have come to help you. First you must…

trust me, he slyly said, eyes flashing a crimson red. The little witch trembled, not knowing if it was from fright or the cold of the river that had soaked her to the bones. Trust him?, she thought. Will he really help me or will I become…

a slimy blue frog. If you got on the wrong side of Tobia, he would change you as quick as a wink. Was that flash of his red eyes a warning or was it meant to ba a comfort? These thoughts were swirling in her water soaked head when tobia said…

take my hand and I’ll pull you ashore. As she was pulled to the safety of dry land, her head began to clear. She now knew that tobia only saved her to take her silver toad. But he could not use the silver toad without a witch’s assistance. If he were ever able to defeat the hairy, black and green, nose hair braiding monster that roamed the forest he would need them both.

Perhaps she could do a deal with Tobia? She would help him and then he would help her to become the good witch she longed to be. But where to find the toad? And what of her farmer love? First she would have to…

she would have to, she would have to. Oh my, her head was swirling with so many thoughts. She couldn’t get her mind going in the right direction, maybe it was that collision with the tree. There was so much to do and yet she just couldn’t get this one main thought out of her mind. She had to…

manipulate Tobia’s motives (whatever they were). She had to cast a spell on him, so he’d assist her in de-witching herself so she could live a happy life with her Prince Farming. Quickly, she…

dried herself off, for she was feeling the chill of being in the stream. She told Tobia that she needed to start a fire to boil some water for tea to take the chill from her bones. As the water began to boil. She got some tea leaves from one of the many secret pockets on her dress. While Tobia was watching her intently, she managed to distract him enough to secretly slip into her tea a pinch of…

Devil’s snuff box-this would ensure that tobia would follow her wishes and

grant her the life she had secretly wished. All these years of tormenting the children had really gotten into her head. She really wanted to live the normal life with Prince Farming. A life she had seen when she looked in the window of…

Sally Johnson’s house. She had witnessed Sally sitting at the kitchen table with her children and her husband playing a game, smiling at one another and laughing together as a family. She turned back to her pot and dipped the cup in to get Tobia a drink of her specail tea and offered it to Tobia. As Tobia reached out to take the cup from the witch, Malicut, his dragon, roared fire from his mouth and nose and whipped his tail around to knock the cup from the witch’s hand. Tobia took a step back and said, ? My dragon, Malicut, is on to you witch, he sees your treachery and tricks.” “That darn dragon”, thought the witch, “first I must get rid of the dragon.” Then a thought came to her, she just needed to…

use her last chance to explain to Tobia her problem. She had been trying to use witchery to remove a spell put on her by a witch. Malicut had completely squashed that try. That method was definitely not the answer. She as at her wits end when she turned to Tobia with his flashing red eyes and said. “I’ve been an excellent witch all these years, but the time has come to…

hang up my broom. I’ve done my best-now I just want to live with my beloved and raise his children. Won’t…

you please understand my problem and help me?” She could see those red eyes start to blaze. Oh my, she thought…

I think I’ve made him mad! Tobia hated to lose another witch to the good side. He would do anything to keep that from happening. Maybe reminding this pretty little farm hand that without her magic to keep her beautiful, she was actually 500 years old, would do the trick. Tobia gently took her hand…

and began to lead her into town. Walking along a narrow path through the forest, she began to notice a familiar odor. She knew the monster was close, but it was dark. Just as they came to a clearing, the monster appeared. He was confused and disoriented. Tobia began to raise his staff, as Malicut lurched forward. He was ready to attack at the wizard’s command. The witch said, “Wait, I have a plan.”

The monster lumbered closer, the witch readied herself. Just as the monster reached them, she dropped the last drop of her special fishishinf juice on the monster’s toe. The monster stood upright, a kaleidescope of colors began emanating from him, he roared, and then a blinding flash of white light. Then quiet. Confusion. And as the smoke cleared, there on the ground laid the most beautiful border collie. The blackest of black contrasting with the whitest of white. It began to move. Then stood on all fours. Shook itself and ran off in the direction of the farmer’s house.

This completely dumfounded the wizard and his dragon. But the witch knew. She had long been in love with the lonely farmer. She was saddened when his only friend had suddenly came up missing. She searched for the farmers only companion, the border collie. Until one day, deep in the forest, at a witches coucil meeting, she overheard that the head witch did not like the sweetness of the border collie, so she cast a spell on him to turn him into the most hideous of monsters. She had saved the farmer’s only friend and now it was time to finish the rest.

She walked along side Tobia, as Malicut followed. It was now the wee hours of morning, Halloween morning. Tobia had silently decided he would not lose another witch to the mortals. If he could not keep her and her evil ways, he would banish her.

As they stood in town square, Tobia raised his staff and began to chant. The world began to spin. The witch began to see her life before her. All the children she had taken, the farmer, witches council meetings, a lost border collie, a silver frog…

That’s it! The silver frog! She whistled and her broom appeared. She gave the broom instructions and the broom flew. In seconds, it reappeared, carrying the silver frog.

Tobia began to shake, his staff began to glow. Malicut was circling. A flash of light came from Tobia’s staff and was coming for the witch. She grabbed the silver toad just as the light reached her, she placed the frog between her and the light. The light was reflected back at Tobia and his dragon.

The ground began trembling and an opening began to form in the center of town square. Tobia began falling, he grabbed his dragon, but the dragon couldn’t hold on. He began to slip. His tail thrashing, fire coming from his mouth as he roared, he was losing his grip. And just as he went over the edge his tail made one last swipe, knocking the witch off her feet and over the edge into the darkness.

The ground closed and all was quiet once again.

Banishing them all. Never to be seen again. Wiping the memory from all the townfolk. No more memory of the unexplained things that happen on Halloween. No memory of the hideous monster that roamed the countryside. No more missing frogs, decapitated turtles, strange 60’s music eminating from the darkness, no more strange brooms showing up and just sitting in the corner of the repair shop.

Except, for a black and white dog who comes to the center of town on All Hallows Eve, and waits. He sits and waits and doesn’t leave his post. Until…

his faithful farmer comes to town at dawn and takes him home.

What?

It’s Halloween.

You really didn’t expect to have a happy ending, did you?

Thank you, again, EVERYONE, for participating in our Halloween story!!!

The Darkness Is Deafening

Autumn is…

 when things wind down.

The harvesting is completed. The canning is finishing up. The days get shorter.

Everyone begins to settle in for the winter. Relaxing by bon fires. Visiting with friends.

But around here…

 about this time…

things get loud.

As the night begins to fall…

The creatures begin to stir.

A coyote howls off at a distance.

At dusk, this poor soul begins to stir.

He whimpers and whines and by dark he’s moaning. He wants out and he’ll let no one rest until he’s released or darkness gives way to the light of day.

And this guy.

He yells at everything that moves. Warning them to “STAY OUT”! Even the bats get scolded, as they whiz by.

I’m telling ya, things get creepy this time of year.

I’ve had reports of a witch flying around at night. Although, I haven’t witnessed it myself. There are people who swear they’ve had to run for cover or be sentenced to a life of misery, living in a witches attic. With only spiders for food and gulping swamp water to quench a never ending thirst.

Her cackling can be heard for miles, as she flies under the cover of night.

Searching…

They say she’s looking for her little sister.

Then there’s the incessant, mocking laughter of this creepy little terror.

At dusk, he begins to giggle. By dark, he is laughing.

So loud and annoying that it will make even the calmest of souls, lose their mind. He hides and he laughs. He never comes out. Is he luring something or someone? Is he inviting his kind to join him? Why does he laugh?

There are earsplitting shrieks coming from the darkness. From what, I don’t know. Could it be an owl? Or something worse? Something too horrible for the human mind to fathom?

And don’t forget about her unremitting, muffled curses as she tries to release herself from the earth that’s holding her captive.

Could she be the little sister?
