It’s When Things Get Done

I thought I’d clue you in on a few more things “getting done” here on the farm.

I’ll start with the digging of the iris bed. Its been a few years since I’ve thinned them out and they are in desperate need of thinning.

I’m just not sure what I’m gonna do with all the “extra” I’ll end up with. Every time I thin them, I give many away.

I give them to family and friends. I send them to work with The Captain and the guys take some home to their wives to pretty up their house.

The original farm house site is where I found these. There were about a dozen. They had been abandoned for many years.  I’m surprised they lasted with so many years of neglect.

But I dug them up and transplanted them in my flower bed. I have since dug them about 4 times. And I know I have given a thousand or more away. And this year I know I’ll end up with a couple of hundred to find new homes for, whether it be here on the farm or at a friends house. Notice I didn’t say family. They all run and hide when they see me digging the iris’. They have more than they need. It’s kinda like the basket of zucchini that mysteriously finds its way to a porch in the middle of the night.

I have dug up a small bed already, the ones shown above. It was a small iris bed that was in desperate need of digging. From it I gave away 170 iris’.

The next one is a huge iris bed. The last time I thinned it, I ended up with over 500 iris’ to give away.

So that’s another of the things getting accomplished here on the farm.

Fall is the time when things get done. It’s not too hot as in the throws of the Summer sun.

And it’s not too cold with the Winter winds.

Wheedle Word 11

Last week’s Wheedle Word was….

“Water”

Several things come to mind when I think water and in no particular order.

Do the horses have plenty of clean water?

Do we have hot water? Or do I need to go push the reset button AGAIN? (we are having a water heater issue that’s driving me nuts)

And right at the present….

How much water are we gonna get from the remnants of Hurricane Ida?

It’s so fun reading what different words bring to the minds of different people. I’m glad you are enjoying playing along with me.

For this week’s Wheedle Word I thought I would stay with the element theme.

So now what comes to mind when I give you the word…..

“AIR”

Will this one be a hard or easy one?

I can’t wait to read your thoughts.

Funny how Wheedle Word 11 falls on November 11, 2009.

And no I didn’t plan that!

Fresh Cut Cedar

Can you believe that I haven’t published a post for three days?

Me neither.

What is this world coming to?

:P

My stress level is running way too high and there’s too many, way too many, things have been going on around here.

For instance….

(not that this is what’s causing the stress, it’s just something that’s needing to be completed)

Now that the tractor is fixed and the weather has cooled, we are working on opening up more pasture for the horses.

I’ll not go into why they have been unable to use this pasture, only to say that it’s about time they have access to it again.

We have been planting poles or setting poles, however you choose to say it.

When we first moved here, we didn’t have a tractor or an auger. All fencepost holes were dug by hand with a post hole digger. We put fence around the perimeter of the farm. Long, hot, hard work days were spent putting up fence.

auger

It’s so nice to have this auger. The post hole digging goes so much faster and is much less back breaking.

posthole

Notice that you don’t have to dig far to get to the red clay that is so common in the South.

We also have been cutting cedars, that have fallen on the farm, to use for corner supports.

Love the smell of fresh cut cedar. But I could do without the noise the chainsaw makes.

This is one of the many things we are trying to get accomplished before winter weather sets in.

Because you have to beg, bribe, or drag to get me outside working in the winter.

I hate cold weather. It takes me forever to warm back up.

For now, most of the posts are standing tall waiting for barbed wire and horseshoe nails.

Then the horses will be happy to have new stuff to munch on.

And we will be moving on to the next project.

So now you know why I haven’t been at the computer.

When you live on a farm, the work never stops.

I wouldn’t have it any other way!

:)
