Saucy Sunday – Grasshoppers

This post is NOT about a drink or a dessert.

It’s about the real thing.

That’s right, the living, breathing thing, grasshoppers.

No, I’m not gonna show you how to cook grasshoppers.

Although, I do have a story about fried grasshoppers.

I know, I know, YUCK. Right?

In the church I grew up in, they had a lot of youth activities. And my brother, being 10 years older than me, was in the middle of all the teen stuff.

One of the leaders had gotten a hold of some fried grasshoppers and posed a contest to see who could eat the most fried grasshoppers.

My brother and one other guy rose to the challenge.

My brother won the contest, by eating one more than the other guy. He consumed a total of 19 fried grasshoppers. And you know, I have no idea what he won. I couldn’t get over the fact that he was crunching on fried grasshoppers.

After that, I never looked at a grasshopper the same.

I like grasshoppers. They are interesting little critters. And the one you see here seemed to be posing while I was happily snapping these pictures. Although, I did watch to make sure that he didn’t spit any tobacco juice on me.

But, a grasshopper, as food? I don’t think so!

I am thankful that I live in the USA, land of the plenty. And I don’t have to eat fried grasshoppers to keep from starving.

How about you?

  1. I have eaten chocolate covered grasshoppers…they weren’t bad. Just crunchy.

  2. I love grasshoppers..when I was a child I used to sit in the grass and watch them for hours…hadn’t thought about that for awhile..I wouldn’t even think about eating one….

  3. I’m thankful I don’t have to eat them either, but you know what, if when we were all small, our parents started us off eating them, we probably wouldn’t think a thing about it. Hope you had a nice week-end.

  4. I wouldn’t even eat them if they were dipped in chocolate!

  5. No, thank you. I do not like them alive, I can’t imagine enjoying them cooked. YUCK!!!

  6. My Grandpa used to fish with grasshoppers. I think they are cute little critters as you’ve captured here but when they jump they scare me to pieces – always have.
This little guy looks like he’s smiling in the second shot.

  7. Cute pictures! I loved to catch grasshoppers as a kid-and yes I let them spit tobacco juice on me :)

  8. YUK!!!! My brother used to pull the heads off grasshoppers (among doing other not-so-nice things to them). Seeing that made me know I’d never eat one, fried or chocolate-covered or ANY OLD WAY!
